More and more in daily clinical practice, professionals witness children and adolescents finding themselves distracted by constant exposure to electronics: TV, video games, iPods, iPhones, texting, emailing, and web surfing. Some are not only distracted by electronics but also are developing actual screen and/or Internet additions in response to overuse. This negatively impacts students’ attention to school and socialization activities that are critical for developing increased maturity across childhood.
The Higher Grounds Teton Adventure Camp is a 10-day wilderness experience that is an extension of our weekly rock climbing group and that provides campers with the opportunity to "unplug" from technology, and "plug into" nature. The experience includes a number of activities aimed at developing self-responsibility, individual goal-setting, developing frustration tolerance and tools to manage emotions more effectively, increasing awareness of sustainability issues within our ecosystem, and the care and appreciation of nature.
Your son will experience wilderness training and personal growth activities through hiking, canoeing, camping, outdoor rock climbing, along with a day of volunteer conservation community service work, all within the majestic beauty of the Grand Teton National Park in Jackson Hole, Wyoming. Our personal guides at the Teton Science Schools provide a well-designed curriculum tailored to the group’s individual needs. Physical challenges throughout the week are combined with leadership training activities, and educational activities around the use of nature as a primary vehicle through which personal growth and change can occur. In addition to training in high terrain hiking, back country camping, and canoeing, members are also exposed to a full day of multi-pitch top-rope rock climbing alongside Hidden Falls at Jenny Lake in conjunction with the world famous Exum Mountain Guides.
